General Admission Requirements for Post Graduate Programmes

MSc/MPhil/PhD COMPUTER SCIENCE

  1. Develop scholars into mature researchers, able to make original scientific contributions that have both practical significance and a rigorous, elegant theoretical grounding that underpins the various areas of Computer Science and IT.
  2. Impart sound knowledge in Computer Science and interdisciplinary areas with Science,
Technology and Management related to Information Systems and their applications in
relevant fields with the latest technologies. Build a pool of technically and scientifically qualified manpower to build a strong scientific community.
  3. To produce excellent Computer Scientists who are capable of conducting high-quality research and who have a sufficiently deep understanding of the subject to be able to make significant contributions to academic institutions and industry through cutting edge research work.
  4. To produce up-to-date and experienced scholars in the various fields of Computer Science with the requisite expertise to serve the human resource needs of centres of higher learning and research in Ghana, Africa and the world.

  1. The MSc and MPhil degrees in Computer Science will serve the needs of those having bachelor’s degrees in Computer Science, Computer Engineering and IT and wishing to improve their expertise in analyzing complex problems (change problems) relevant to the field of study and obtain the required knowledge and information. These programs prepare graduates to take up academic positions in senior high schools, universities or other educational institutes.
  2. The PhD programme is open to graduates of other relevant disciplines in Science and/or Engineering with strong scientific computing and mathematical backgrounds. Such candidates from other disciplines will have to take up most of the MPhil course to prepare them for the PhD Programme.

  1. MSc Computer Science is a 1-year programme
  2. MPhil Computer Science is a 2-year programme
  3. PhD Computer Science is a 4-year programme

Both (Weekdays and Weekends)

Upon successful completion of their studies, graduates of the programme should be able to:

    • 1. Apply critical and analytical reasoning and present logical and concise arguments.
    • 2. Develop problem-solving skills.
    • 3. Assimilate and manipulate substantial bodies of knowledge.
    • 4. Understand and present sophisticated mathematical arguments and rigorous proofs.
    • 5. Comprehend high levels of abstraction in the study of mathematics.
    • Apply physical insight and mathematical techniques to the solution of problems in applied mathematics and real-life situations.

The MPhil degree in Applied Mathematics will serve the needs of those having bachelor degrees with strong mathematics component and wishing to extend their expertise in mathematics to model real-world situations in Biology, Engineering, Natural Resource and Business, Finance, etc.

The programme may be run on a full-time or part-time basis. For full-time registration, the minimum duration shall normally be four semesters (i.e. 2 years) and a maximum of six semesters (i.e. 3 years). For part-time registration, the minimum duration shall be six semesters (i.e. 3 years) and a maximum of ten semesters (5 years), from the date of registration.

Weekends only

To be eligible for admission into the Master of Philosophy Degree(MPhil)  programme, candidates must be graduates of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) or any other University recognized by the Academic Board of UENR and shall normally have obtained a minimum of Second-Class (Lower Division) degree in the relevant field of mathematical sciences (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering etc.).

MPhil Applied Mathematics

The criteria for admission into the MSc. in Computer Science programme would be as follows, provided all the conditions below are satisfied:

  1. Candidate must have a BSc. degree in Computer Sciences, or any related discipline from an accredited University with a minimum of Second-Class (Lower Division).
  2. Candidate must demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity for independent work, maturity, effective decision making and problem-solving potentials.
  3. In exceptional cases, holders of BSc Computer Science with a minimum of Third-Class and at least three years relevant working experience would be considered for admission.

The criteria for admission into the MPhil in Computer Science programme would be as follows, provided all the conditions below are satisfied:

  1. Candidate must have a BSc. degree in Computer Sciences, or any related discipline from an accredited University with a minimum of Second-Class Honors (Lower Division).
  2. Candidate must demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity for independent work, maturity, effective decision making and problem-solving potentials.

The criteria for admission into the PhD in Computer Science programme would be as follows, provided all the conditions below are satisfied:

  1. Candidate must have a BSc. degree in Computer Sciences or any related discipline from an accredited University with a minimum of Second-Class Honours (Lower Division).
  2. Candidate must have an MPhil in Computer Science or its equivalent from an accredited University.
  3. Candidate must demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity for independent work, maturity, effective decision making and problem-solving potentials.
  4. The PhD programme is also open to candidates holding qualifications other than Computer Science. Applicants with qualification in Science and/or Engineering background with a strong Computing and Mathematical background may be considered. Such candidates will have to take up most of the MPhil Computer Science course to prepare them for the PhD Programme.
